Biogas Dehydration Technology: From History to the Future
History of Biogas Development
Initially,
biogas can be traced back to the late 1920s, primarily serving the lighting needs of temples and shops, and gradually expanded into the lives of rural and urban residents.
Later,
China experienced a second wave of biogas development, with many biogas digesters constructed across the country. However, due to immature technology and lack of management, most biogas digesters were abandoned in a short period.
Now,
with technological advancements and increased environmental awareness, the biogas industry in China has developed rapidly, and biogas engineering technology is continuously improving.

Why is biogas always used at atmospheric pressure?Biogas is a mixture of gases produced at atmospheric pressure through the microbial decomposition of organic matter under anaerobic or hypoxic conditions. Its main components include methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and hydrogen. Since the production process of biogas occurs at atmospheric pressure, biogas itself also exists at atmospheric pressure.
In addition, biogas at atmospheric pressure is easier to collect and process, and has higher safety, avoiding the safety risks that high pressure may bring.

Biogas purification is called biomethane.
The green, low-carbon, clean, and environmentally friendly renewable gas obtained from biogas purification is called biomethane. Biomethane has components and calorific values that are basically consistent with conventional natural gas, and can be used as vehicle fuel or injected into the natural gas pipeline network for industrial or residential use. The purified biomethane expands the application fields of traditional biogas, improves the economic efficiency of biogas projects, and promotes the sustainability and stability of biogas project operations.

Development Prospects of Biomethane in China
China has a shortage of natural gas resources and a large market demand, and the biogas industry is in a period of rapid development. The country has abundant biomass resources, providing a good raw material source for the biogas industry.
By the end of 2018, China's biogas production had reached 11 billion cubic meters per year. The development of biomethane can not only reduce air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust emissions but also decrease net greenhouse gas emissions by 75% to 200%, playing a significant role in resource conservation and environmental protection. With technological advancements and policy support, the biomethane industry has broad market prospects in China and is expected to occupy an important position in the future energy structure.
